Languages. Let's help one another

Post by Mist »

I still don't know if this is a good idea, or not.
If not the admin can remove it. Dont close it, just delete.

My thought is that we can help one another with language questions, mainly translating from English to Portuguese, or the other way around. :P

Either myself, or someone else, might be able to assist, when it comes to the English language. I know several languages, at least a little. I understand Portuguese and German without problems, some Spanish too and so on. Swedish fluently, of course.

Mist, you could solve these little doubts!

It'll help everyone here once, but just if you want to.

And I'll be around... and can help a little as well! ^^

It's not a bad idea, really. I think I can help. English is my second language and I don't have problem helping people with it. Well, I hope so, hehehe.

Thanks Hathipo, and all of you :)
Have (has? Had?) problems with this... i don't know to use have, had or has very well....

Okey, I have problems with this too in Portuguese. I have lerned it, but keep forgetting.
And I do have problems with prepositions. (preposições)

Today(hoje)
I have - you have - he, she,it has - we have - you have - they have.
Eu tenho - tu tens - ele, ela tem - nos temos -vos tendes - eles, elas têm.

Yesterday(ontem)
I had - you had - he, she, it had - we had- you had - they had

Today: I have done something, or I have something. Yesterday: I did this or that, or I had something (but don't have it any more.)

Today (hoje): I have a dog. (tenho um cachorro) She has a cat. (ela tem um gato)
Yesterday or earlier (ontem): I had a dog. Não tenho mais. O coitadinho caiu morte, ou eu dei para minha amiga.( por isso não tenho mais) She had a dog. - I had a terrible headache. She had a terrible headache. They had, too. We all had terrible headaches.
We often have a good time. (without headaches)

"Have" is a main verb, but one can add a "had" when it's needed.
Have you had a nice time? (near past)
Have you had a nice afternoon, Linda? No, I have had a really lousy time. I spilled tea all over my dress.
Exemplos burros, mas simples.

Thanks
Beijos - Kisses to you

So glad if that was helpful. I always thought I wasn't patient enough to become a teacher. My dad had wanted me to, but I followed another path in life.

Should you need translation of some sentences or so, it's just to ask.

Wonderful that so many have offered to help out with languages.
I have noticed that Babelfish or translation help on line can't be trusted. I don't try to use them any more.
Better to ask friends for help.

I use babelfish just when i'm desparate. xD

I don't like... THe translations are very poor, and confuses...
"Ao pé da letra", say the brazilians, =P

Normally my friends help me...
Is more easy, isn't? ^^

My eternal doubt has to do with Past Perfect.

Ok, I'm better in it now, but I still have problems with this "lovely" verb tense.

So glad that you manage that now, Betynha. :palmas

Yes, it's probably a bit complicated.
The thing is that you never think about it, when it comes to your own language, or in my case the English language, too.

I guess you never think about the following sentence in Portuguese, Betynha, if it is past perfect or not :
O ônibus tem(???) vindo tarde cada dia esta semana.
The bus has been coming late every day this week.
This is an action - happening repeatedly every day - during all week.

I'm not very good at explaining this but here are some pointers.
Past perfect is used:
* representando " the past in the past"
* atos repetidos
* para esclarecer dois "past actions"
* Para responder "how long"
There are some more ways to use it than these, certainly.

Hermione looked very tired. I could see that she had been staying up every night lately, doing her homework. (Plus helping Harry and Ron)
Harry and Ron were soaking wet. I knew they had been diving in the lake.

Actions happening repeatedly(atos repetidos):
Snape has been giving us exams every week for the past few weeks.

Concluindo/para fazer conclucões:
There was a leak in the bathroom pipes, that is why the water bill had been getting higher and higher each month.
McGonagall looks very tired. She has been marking tests all day long.

Atos passados occurendo durante um periodo:
I have been playing piano since I was a child.
I have been working for Fred and George, in their shop, for many years now.

Past perfect continous verb interchanges with the simple past one:
I had slept all night (simples)
I had been sleeping all night (continuindo)

Usado para responder a pergunta "quanto tempo" (how long)
How long had you been waiting for the train to come?
-----
Hope I got that all right. I am no teacher, after all 8)

You're not a teacher, but you could've been! ^^'

This explanation will be very useful... I'm sure!

Anyway, only one little thing: A wet Ron?? Oh God!! 8)

My, oh my, Betynha.
I hope you were thinking about the water in the lake (at Hogwarts).
It seems that you're thoughts wandered off somewhere else??
Well, I don't really know what you're suggesting, I'm sure. #-o

A wet Ron = Ron after jumping in the lake. (All this because I remembered Ron after the second task at GoF).

Anyway, I forgot to ask a little thing:

Do you know any site with grammar subject??? I know one, but I don't like it so much! ¬¬'

Ooooooooooh! There is an English teacher here!!!!!

Mist, how much cost your classes???? XD

Your idea is wonderful, really...

I'm not finishing my English course yet.. I have more one year and a half of course.. But I will have to stop it because of the college =[

I can help too, sometimes... .But I'm better correcting than teaching.. I always correct my homeworks from my teacher/boss *I work as secretary in a English school ^^* but I not so good yet..
It would help me too, I can practice and so I won't forget a the most part that I learned... ^^

So.. that's all ^^

Hey mist, this idea is really really good!

I have decided to buy the Harry POtter and the Deathly Hallows because I need to read more in English - I used to read English books when I was in highschool, but not anymore. I have a really good English dictionary (webster) but I know that JK invented lots of other "magical" expressions, such as "Crumple Horned Snorcack", which cost me quite a while to figure out it was Luna's crazy belief (bufadores de chifre enrugado). Do you think the forum moderators would mind if I used this topic for discussing translation matters of book seven? It wouldn't be really a spoiler, only expressions not commonly used by muggles.

Thanks everyone,
kisses

Thanks Yuuko, the lessons are totally free of charge.
In other words they'll cost nothing. :)
I need to point out though, to you and everbody else, that my English is the one being spoken and written in Great Britain.

By the way
- a - is used before a word starting with a consonant - a man, a boy a girl, a thing
- an - is used before a word starting with a vowel (a, e, i, o, u) - an English class, an ant (uma formiga) an opal - and so on.

Myself I will need help with my Portuguese, so if someone wants to help me that would be ever so nice.
Great if you too can help out, Yuuko.

Another thanks to you, Scharlett :)
Mmm, Luna has some funny beliefs, but I love her for it. I'm pretty sure that some of her ideas are perfectly true. Not the one you mentioned, of course.

If you want to make an equal topic, for the book seven discussions
( magical expressions), I really don't mind.
But maybe you'd better ask the moderators first?
Did you mean a topic in the Portuguese language over on the other side - or here in the International forum?
I guess you are going to buy the Scholastic version of book seven?
It's going to be the British one for me (Bloomsbury edition).
